Mandell Academy for Teachers

The Joyce D. and Andrew J. Mandell Academy for Teachers at the Connecticut Science Center: Transforming Science Classrooms through Professional Learning

Our Purpose: High-quality educators equip our children with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) abilities that have become essential to productive civic engagement and successful careers. The Joyce D. and Andrew J. Mandell Academy for Teachers at the Connecticut Science Center is committed to supporting educators in this effort through professional learning experiences that support rigorous educational standards. Through our programs, the Academy helps to transform classroom learning experiences, supporting success for all students.
Our Approach: The Mandell Academy believes strongly in evidence-based approaches to PD. We provide comprehensive, customizable, multi-year PD pathways that include coaching and other follow-up support to sustain momentum in the classroom. Our programs put participants at the center of the professional learning experience, weaving together activities that provide both learner and educator perspectives. They focus on deeper understanding of key principles while providing knowledge and resources that can be put into practice immediately.
Our Programs and Partners: The Mandell Academy provides professional learning in three areas: 1) multi-subject pedagogy for whole schools, 2) engineering for elementary educators, and 3) implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. Through recent efforts in partnership with the Connecticut State Department of Education, and with the support of our Science Forward Initiative, we have updated and greatly expanded our offerings and facilitator network to meet a wider range of needs. Our ideal school or district partner has school-wide pedagogical advancement and/or science as a leading priority. However, we also offer open/public sessions to accommodate additional schools and districts. Learn more below!
