Butterfly Encounter

Butterfly Encounter is an all-new, must-see destination within the Connecticut Science Center. Become immersed in a lush tropical habitat surrounded by hundreds of butterflies (at the most glorious stage of their fascinating life cycle) moving freely throughout the exhibit. Guests of all ages will be delighted as they experience 40-50 different species of butterflies through intimate interaction all set in a unique, custom-designed greenhouse. Separate ticket required.

Hogwarts Celebration of Science and Sorcery

The Wizarding World created by the popular book and movie series meets the hands-on fun of the Connecticut Science Center for one magical weekend. Brew your own potions or learn how to properly fight in Dumbledore’s Army. Adult Coffee Club: Ancestry

Join Nora Galvin as we explore DNA and our own backgrounds. Discover the three types of DNA tested (mitochondrial, Y and autosomal), the three main companies that test this DNA, and some strategies on how to read your own results. Whether you are an experienced researcher, or you have just begun your study, this talk will help answer the questions you may have on the science behind testing your own DNA.

Nora Galvin was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio and is a descendent of nine immigrants from eight counties in Ireland. Besides having a passion for genealogical research, Nora is a member of Association of Professional Genealogists, a former secondary-school science teacher and a former research scientist at a major pharmaceutical company where she used DNA as a drug discovery tool.

All visitors will get the fun of the Connecticut Science Center plus tons of activities, arts & crafts, and LIVE Gallery Science Demonstrations without the usual loud sounds and bright lights. All are welcome!

Adult Coffee Club – How to Make a New York Times Crossword, April 17th from 1–3PM

Who makes the crosswords that appear in the New York Times? Hundreds of people around the country, all of whom share a love of wordplay and puzzles. Take a look behind the scenes with Eric Berlin, a professional puzzle constructor who has contributed dozens of crosswords to the New York Times. He’ll demonstrate what goes into the creation of a successful crossword puzzle — from coming up with a theme, to making the grid, to devising the clues.

Eric Berlin is the founder of Puzzle Your Kids, which provides free, top-quality pencil puzzles to thousands of children around the world… Eric has had dozens of crosswords in theNew York Times, as well as in outlets such as The Wall Street JournalThe Los Angeles Times, Games Magazine, and many more. He has created live puzzle events for the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, the Connecticut Library Association, and the Milford Public Library, and has puzzled kids across the country with his school and library visits.
